Choral & Organ Scholarships

Music has always been at the heart of the liturgy at St Jude’s and with Henrietta Barnet School next door, we established a formal musical educational link with the school in 2004 with the provision of organ scholarships. This scheme has been a great success with many of the holders of the organ scholarship pursuing organ playing and music as a career. Our scholars have gone on to hold music scholarships at Merton and Hertford College, Oxford, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and one of our organ scholars from 2008-2010, Anna Steppler is now studying organ for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Cornell University, New York.  The organ scholarships were initially limited to one student per year but we now support two students annually. The organ scholars benefit from the opportunity to develop their musical abilities on our magnificent Father Willis organ. With the success of the organ scholarships, we felt that we should offer choral scholarships to 4 young singers each academic year. We started this new scheme in 2015 and it has provided the musical backbone to our regular amateur choir ever since. We specifically wanted to provide opportunities for sixth form students and students in their first year at university. Hence, the target age group is 16-20 year olds. At St Jude’s we believe in opportunities for all and we endeavour to enhance the sight-reading capabilities and performance standard of all young singers in our choir. The choral scholars also support the work of the junior singers in the choir and perform regularly as soloists in our sung Eucharist each Sunday. Given the scholastic and other commitments that our target age group have, we now allow each voice part to be shared with one other person so that all four voice parts are covered in each Sunday service. The choral scholars receive a stipend of the equivalent to £15 per week to support their choral training and help prepare them for choral scholarships at top universities.
